Popjew Interview

The Weekly Boarder caught up with Rachel (A.K.A. Popjew) for a brief interview. She’s a mover and/or shaker in the Brooklyn music scene and a generally nice young lady.
Why is being jewish such a big part of how you self-identify yourself?
Well, I’ve felt very connected to Judaism from a young age, and I actually started booking shows at my temple when I was in High School. Recently though, I have come to realize something special about Judaism:
When the number values of the letters in the Hebrew word for life, “Chai,” are added up, they equal 18, a number that is very special in Judaism.
Interestingly enough, when you add up “the Lost numbers” (4,8,15,16,22,42) the sum is 108. If you divide 108 by 18 you get 6. I find this fascinating: that’s one “life” for each member of the Oceanic 6.
Do you do a lot of air quotes IRL? (IRL means ‘in real life’)
I tend to do air quotes in real life whenever I’m talking about something and need to be taken EXTREMELY seriously. Serious people use quotes to back up evidence! Whenever trying to debate theories on the origin of The Island I will try to “out air quote” my opponent in order to “win” the argument.
Do you have any incriminating information that you’d like to put out into the open now?
I really don’t have much in my life to be embarrassed about, I’m usually pretty honest about the embarrassing stuff in my past (for example, my ska phase), but there is one thing that is pretty embarrassing that I should probably get out there now:
I didn’t get on the Lost-train until midway through the second season! I know I act like I’m an authentic Lost fan, but I’m really just a wannabe poseur.
Are you a woman of ideas or of action? do you see yourself as a creative or a structured person? In short, what unique characteristics do you think you bring to the table?
I like to see myself as kind of Jack-type. Don’t get me wrong, I usually think that Jack is a douche, but I think he has some good ideas. I know in earlier seasons Jack was a “man-of-science” type while Locke was the “man-of-faith,” but as Jack has gotten more in touch with himself (and the island) he’s realized that even though his logic has helped him in the past, sometimes it is important just to trust in what the Universe will throw at you. I like that. I tend to be kind of cynical and bitter, but I like to think that I can open my mind to the magic of the world.
As far as unique characteristics that I bring to the table: I can touch my tongue to my nose and I can quote every line that has ever been in a Futurama episode ever. I also type at 85 wpm using the Dvorak simplified keyboard.
Are you a person of conflict or of accommodation? do you appreciate tension or harmony?
I appreciate tension… I’m a total drama queen, I can’t help it. I’m never more bored or antsy than when things are going well. I like to have raucous nights that end with shotgunning beers on someone’s roof at 5am while screaming.
Maybe that’s why I love Lost so much, you can never relax, not even for a minute! Just when you’re having a nice picnic with some girl you like, your crazy friend comes out of nowhere and shoots her, you know what I’m saying?
Have you ever read Hipinion? if so who is your favourite boarder and why?
No. Are there any Lost threads? I’ll read the Lost threads.
What is closer to your ideal: a charming but flawed renaissance man, or a mundane but well rounded, easy going bicycle enthusiast?
In all seriousness, not into bikers. I like to ride bikes, I just don’t like to hang out with dudes that just want to talk about their bikes all day… borrrrring.
I can’t stand easy-going guys in general. I’m too fiery to handle a Bernard or a Goodwin. I need excitement. Charming but flawed is definitely my favorite. It might shock you to hear that my biggest Lost crushes have been Ethan Rom and Miles. Those guys are the best…. killing people, talking to dead people, all while being cute??? SWOON CITY!
Hope that answers your questions!
Thank you very much for your time. By the way, you should try and register. It is open right now, and yes there’s lots of Lost threads.
I don’t think I really want to post on hipinion any more… honestly, I’ve lurked and people have said pretty mean shit about me and I feel like if I actually registered I’d just be an idiot trying to defend myself and that wouldn’t be fun. Terminal Boredom is enough message board for me right now.
xoxo
